December 14th will see the best of the 2019 International Champions Cup Futures Tournament group stage participants begin to square off in single elimination knockout round. The teams from the boys side of the bracket who advanced to the knockout round were AS Roma, Real Madrid, New York Red Bulls, Paris Saint-Germain, Vasco da Gama, Chivas de Guadalajara, FC Barcelona and Benfica. Then on the girls side, the teams who went through to the knockout round were LAFC Slammers, FC Barcelona, ICC West Regional All-Stars and Players Development Academy.
Now let’s take a look at the matchups taking place tomorrow.
AS Roma vs Real Madrid 8:00 a.m. ET
Both AS Roma and Real Madrid topped their group in impressive fashion. Roma went undefeated and claim all 9 points in group 4 by getting victories over Arsenal, Tampa Bay Rowdies and Allstate Sueno Alianza. Real Madrid finished in first place in group 1 by besting Houston Dynamo, ICC East and taking Chivas de Guadalajara to penalties.
New York Red Bulls vs Paris Saint-Germain 10:00 a.m. ET
New York Red Bulls weren’t messing around in the group stages and took all 9 points available in group 5 by beating Tottenham Hotspur, Michigan Wolves and ICC South. They’ll be carrying the torch for MLS and the United States as the only American team to advance to the knockout round. PSG advanced after finishing with the joint highest points total for a second place team. They defeated New England Revolution and ICC West before falling to Benfica in their final group stage match.
CR Vasco da Gama vs Chivas de Guadalajara 1:00 p.m. ET
CR Vasco da Gama represented their home country well in the group stages. The first and only Brazilian side to feature in an ICC Futures tournament won all three of their games in group 3, defeating Juventus, ICC Midwest and North Carolina Football Club. Chivas de Guadalajara represented Mexico proudly as well, advancing to the next round after finishing with the joint highest points total for a second place team. They drew twice and won once to get six points.
FC Barcelona vs Benfica 3:00 p.m. ET
A battle of the heavy weights, FC Barcelona and Benfica both topped their groups in commanding style. Barca defeated LA Galaxy, Inter Miami and Shanghai Football team to go undefeated in the group stage while Benfica defeated ICC West, New England Revolution in penalties and then impressively beat fellow knockout round advancer PSG 4-1 in their final group stage game.
LAFC Slammers vs FC Barcelona 5:00 p.m. ET
After LAFC Slammers lost their opening game against ICC South on penalties, they fought back and beat Manchester City and Player Development Academy to top group 2 and advance to the knockout stages. FC Barcelona rebounded in a similar way after losing to Paris Saint-Germain in their opening game, they went on to beat ICC Midwest and Heat FC Nevada to finish in first place in group 3.
ICC West Regional All-Stars vs Players Development Academy 7:00 p.m. ET
ICC West relied on their defense to see them through, not having to score more than a single goal in a game to advance to the knockout round. They beat Atlético de Madrid, Concorde Fire and lost to ICC East Regional All-Stars on penalties to finish with 7 points and win Group 1. Players Development Academy advanced after having the highest goal difference and joint highest point total for second place teams. They defeated Manchester City and ICC South before losing to LAFC Slammers.
